This kind of journalism, making all First Nations seem like they are a homogenous group against pipelines, has been exposed and criticized for a decade and yet here it rises again.
“First Nations chiefs” in this article actually just refers to the UBCIC. UBCIC does not list who their members are. It is the three people on the executive committee who “call on Carney to halt the pipeline” and much of their work and funding is for activism against fossil fuel expansion.

People ask me what Chow is like. I tell them she is a deeply dishonest person.

Despite a $120,000 family income, @oliviachow lived in the publicly-subsidized Hazelburn co-op in Toronto and paid $800 a month for a three bedroom + den unit. According to the co-op, she should have been paying hundreds more. Thousands of people were on the waiting lists for the kinds of units Chow occupied. She moved out shortly after getting caught by the media.

All of that is verifiably true. And it is considered so damaging, Chow's campaign has done secret focus group research on what to say about it.

My son Julian just released Overcome, his second album of original songs on Spotify today.

He was three years old when he first sang in front of an audience. We were attending my cousin Bob Anderson's wedding, almost thirty years ago—in a small town hall in Aylsham, Saskatchewan, now one of that province's many ghost towns.

My wife Tammy and I had been collecting old Country and Western albums for a few years by then. We listened to them in our cozy little house by the park in Arlington, Massachussetts, where we lived when I was lecturing and doing research at Harvard, and in our car, when we drove to Crane Beach for the day.

The kids (Julian and his older sister Mikhaila) were accustomed to singing along to Johnny Horton, the Sons of the Pioneers, the Carter Family—all the old greats of the genre. Julian's voice was notable for its clear tone and perfect pitch.

The wedding ceremony had concluded. We were in the hall for the dinner speeches and the wedding dance. People were stepping up to the microphone to say a few words, complimentary or humorous, about the bride and groom.

Tammy picked up Julian, and said, "do you want to see something magical? Go up there and sing 'Why don't you love me.'" He said, "Mom, you have to come with me." She said, "I'll hold you up."

They were up at the mic at the next opportunity, Tammy and our bright-eyed son, surveying the preoccupied crowd, murmuring away absently as they ate and talked.

"Why don't you love me like you used to do?

How come you treat me like a worn-out shoe?

His three-year old voice, innocent, confident, clear as a bell, rang out over the assemblage. Everyone stopped, silent, turning their attention to the pair at the front of the hall:

"My hair's still curly and my eyes are still blue

Why don't you love me like you used to do?"

Cowboys and farmers and their wives and girlfriends immediately on their feet clapping and cheering. The magic Tammy promised.

He sang a lot after that. In Toronto, with an advanced children's choir that performed at Carnegie Hall and the UN. We went to New York with my sister Bonnie, my mother Beverley, and her sister Margaret—mother to the aforementioned Bob—to hear him to and his fellow choir members. That was ridiculously exciting. He picked up the guitar in his teens, and formed a small band. He started writing songs, and released his first album, Sight, in 2020.

On my last two tours, I always traveled with a musician. My son performed that role on a dozen or more occasions. His mother and I would listen backstage to the four or five songs he played, bursting with pride as he charmed the audience. I can't tell you what a privilege that was.

It strikes me to the soul to recall it.

On a couple of rare occasions he sang, to open, Tammy gave a speech to set the tone for the lecture, and Mikhaila, my daughter, handled the Q and A, all four of us in the great old theatres we were so fortunate to visit, thrilled to death to be there together, understanding the impossibility of what was happening, overcome with gratitude and thankfulness.

I can't tell you how much I love my son. He's a rock. He's great. I love his wife Jillian. They have three great kids, the grandchildren the two of them have blessed Tammy and I with.

Congratulations, Julian. Long may you play.
