Under a statewide restriction announced by Gov. Cox today, personal fireworks are prohibited throughout Salt Lake City and across Utah through July 5.
We are asking everyone to prioritize safety, follow the statewide restriction and help protect our neighborhoods, firefighters and natural spaces by celebrating without personal fireworks this summer.
We encourage residents looking for ways to celebrate to attend organized events, including @slcpubliclands’ drone shows on July 3 at Jordan Park and July 24 at Liberty Park.

Thanks to the incredible work of the firefighters, the #BonnevilleFire transitioned back to the local unit this morning. Crews and engines will remain on scene working until containment is reached and visible hotspots are extinguished. The fire remains at 566 acres and 95% contained. This is still an active fire, and the trail closures remain in place until further notice. Please do not report the smoke, which will continue to be visible.
The University of Utah President Taylor Randall and CEO of University of Utah Healthcare Dr. Bob Carter attended morning briefing to personally thank the firefighters for their heroic efforts. To paraphrase, he mentioned how often you hear the phrase in wildland fire "Hold the Line". It wasn't until Saturday night when he understood the literal meaning. Staff watched from the buildings as firefighters lined up along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail all night as a last defense against the quick moving flame front. Working tirelessly to prevent the fire from reaching the hospitals and preventing a mass evacuation. There's few things more impressive and inspiring than watching brave men and women standing in line, in the path of a fire, to protect our communities. It was truly heroic. They held that line... and saved lives
The Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team and crews working the fire want to express their deep appreciation to the staff of University of Utah (including the hospitals), SLC Fire Department, SLC Emergency Management, SLCO Emergency Management, SLC Police Department, SLC Park Rangers, SLC 911 dispatch, the initial attack resources, and all those that have supported the Team to extinguish this fire. It's truly a coordinated effort, and words don't do justice to the gratitude we feel for the community. It's going to be a long, difficult fire season. This was the first of likely many fires for our Northern Utah Team and crews will respond to this summer. And while we'd rather not be here under these circumstances... we're grateful we were here to hold the line. Stay strong, Utah 🔥
(Note of education: It was feasible to hold the line on this fire because of the existing fuel break of the trail, the small grass vegetation, and the right wind and uphill topography (along with many other favorable factors). This type of direct attack isn't always an option and rarely are conditions ideal where it's safe to do. The ability to stop this fire on one side quickly should not be used as comparison to larger fires in dense vegetation, burning much hotter and more dangerous. Have grace with our firefighters on this and all fires. We're quite literally doing our best, the safest way possible. Fire is the only natural disaster we ask men and women to stand in front of and stop. And that's easier said than done 🔥)
The #BonnevilleFire was extremely quiet overnight. The fire is 566 acres and 43%. There's currently 184 personnel on scene. As other fires in the state have immediate needs, we will share resources we can spare to assist response.
There's currently no threat to residents or structures, but the trails are still closed (Bonneville Shoreline, City Creek, Dry Creek, and Red Butte Trail.)
The event at Red Butte tonight is still planned to continue. We ask attendees to use extra caution in the area and to avoid blocking roadways and egress.
Despite the smoke in the air along the Wasatch Front, crews on #BonnevilleFire are making great progress. A mapping flight estimated acreage at 566, but that has not yet been ground truthed by crews or GIS. The acreage and containment will be updated later today when calculated. Fire managers are confident we will see an increase in containment tonight.
The "Ready" status has been lifted for Arlington Hills and there are correctly no areas of any level of evacuations on this fire. Residents should continue to follow fire updates, but the threat to the community is minimal at this time.
The smoke in the air in the Salt Lake Valley is mostly from the #HastingsFire near Tooele. With the wind blowing east, the smoke from their firing operations is blowing towards Salt Lake. There has not been an increase in fire activity on the Bonneville Fire.
Bonneville Fire Update - We will be resuming frequent updates tomorrow morning. Please continue to avoid the area and abide by the temporary flight restriction for the area. Thank you.
Update for the #BonnevilleFire east of Salt Lake City
The fire was mapped at 495 acres and is now 5% contained. Containment is mostly on the west portion of the fire. The Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team is managing the fire and should be able to provide a map of the fire tomorrow. There was moderate fire behavior today, making small runs in the dry grass but slowing to a creep in the more dense vegetation (brush).
Arlington Hills area (11th Avenue to Tomahawk Drive) is under a “READY” status for evacuations, per @SLCFD. This does not mean there is an immediate threat, but is simply to help residents prepare in case the fire behavior increases in the direction of the community. Residents in this community, as well as other surrounding areas, should continue to stay informed of the status of the fire. Red Butte Gardens and the Utah Museum of Natural History are open, with cautions to visitors to stay alert to fire updates. There are currently no impacts to businesses on the U of U campus or nearby hospitals.
On the east side, the fire has crested the Van Cott peak, and is moving slowly down the mountain. Aerial resources provided fire retardant and water drops to slow the progress further into Red Butte and Dry Creek drainages. Firefighters are working diligently to keep the fire from progressing further east and keeping it away from Emigration Canyon, one of the largest Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas in the nation. There are currently no impacts at this time to the Canyon, but residents should continue to follow fire updates.
Due to the cooler temperatures settling in overnight, residents can expect to see smoke settle into the valley again tonight. This inversion usually lifts midmorning as it warms. Those with sensitive health conditions should take the necessary precautions. The increase in smoke does not necessarily mean an increase in fire behavior.
We ask that residents continue to avoid the area and trails. Law enforcement is patrolling the trail system, looking for violators and/or drones impeding the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR). Today we had a drone intrusion. When unauthorized drones are present, firefighting helicopters and aircraft are forced to suspend operations, delay suppression efforts, and increasing the risk to both responders and the community.

READY Status Issued for Arlington Hills (11th Avenue to Tomahawk Drive)
Due to wildfire activity in the area, residents of Arlington Hills are now under a READY evacuation status from the #BonnevilleFire.
“READY” EVACUATION NOTICE for #BonnevilleFire in Salt Lake City, UT
READY means THERE IS CURRENTLY NO IMMEDIATE THREAT, but conditions could change quickly. Residents should take steps now to prepare in case an evacuation becomes necessary.
Please stay out of the area of the Bonneville Fire. Crews from @slcfire and other agencies need space both on the ground and in the air to fight the fire.
Trails in the area are closed and roads should only be accessed by residents.
Do NOT fly drones anywhere near the fire.
Officers will be patrolling the area.

For your information, if an evacuation becomes necessary, please refer to pages 8–12 of the Ready, Set, Go guide for guidance on how to prepare and what steps to take before and during an evacuation. Wildfires are rapidly changing, but we will update you with any new information.
#BonnevilleFire morning update for 6-21-26. Currently mapped at 395 acres and 0% contained. The fire remained active overnight, and firefighters worked the perimeter throughout the night.
Still no residences under evacuation, and the shelter in place was lifted around midnight last night. We still ask residents and the public to avoid the area as much as possible to not impede firefighter traffic.
A TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) is in place over the fire area. Drones are prohibited within the TFR. The trails in the area are also closed (Bonneville Trail, City Creek, Dry Creek, Red Butte). Law enforcement will be patrolling the area and dealing with and intrusions, either drones or trails.
Continue to avoid the area. Temporary flight restrictions still remain in effect.
Smoke will be visible throughout the City. Stay near air purifiers when possible and wear a mask when outdoors.
We are currently working a grass fire at about 1950 East Circle of Hope Drive. Currently no structures are threatened. Please avoid the area and avoid flying drones in the area. PIO in route. Updates to follow this post.
