I've had a steep learning curve in terms of aphasia & word retrieval difficulties during my final block placement @GoSHspeech. I thought I'd share some info that I've learnt. #aphasia#speechtherapy#stroke
The simple model of reading has been really helpful for my last placement and even my job as an AHA. Fact: about 3 in 10 people with dyslexia have ADHD!

We've learnt that Caffeine dehydrates our vocal folds BUT I came across this article that didn't find a statistically significant effect of caffeine on voice! 😳 https://t.co/CSTibzsTlN

"Some children with austism have a very poor concept or boundaries". I never really understood this until I met one of the children on my caseload. This child spends the whole session on my lap while hugging and kissing me which came as a shock to me at first.
I have been gradually increasing the distance between us during sessions by introducing stratrgies such as placing tape on the carpet around us. I explained the concept personal space and none of us are allowed to invade the other person's personal space.
Aphasia is an acquired disorder that affects how you communicate. It can impact your speech and the way you write and understand both spoken and written language.
Aphasia DOES NOT affect someone's intelligence! @SpeechPathAus@GoSHspeech
The highlight of my penultimate placement was observing a Modified Barium Swallow which is an xray that visualises the mouth and the throat while the patient swallows food/fluid to check for swallowing difficulties. YES! Barium is safe to swallow. #speechtherapy#SLPeeps
Using my 'crafts basket' as I am working on fine motor skills with my client this week. These develop through children using their hands in a precise and coordinated way. We will be drawing, painting, cutting and creating our own crafts! So excited!!
