204 years ago today, Fr. Francois Niel posted an announcement in the Missouri Gazette, announcing that a new "academy for young gentlemen" was enrolling students. #SLU held its first classes that November.

#OTD in 1964, Martin Luther King spoke on the #SLU campus. Dr. King held a press conference in @piuslibrary in the afternoon, then gave a speech in the West Pine Gym (now the Ctr for Global Citizenship) later that evening.
In the #Catholic and #Anglican church, September 29 is the feast day of all the archangels, also called Michaelmas. The three archangels celebrated in the West are Raphael, Gabriel, and Michael. (The East celebrates November 8, and also includes a fourth named Uriel).

John Reinhold Bender (1882-1928), the handsome devil in our profile pic, was hired to coach #SLU Football #OTD in 1910. He went 13-3-1 in his two seasons at SLU, and most importantly inspired our equally handsome mascot, @The_Billiken
