The working people of Sri Lanka mark this year’s May Day at a decisive moment, as the country secures significant economic achievements despite a challenging global climate shaped by conflict.
Even amid major challenges such as United States tariffs, Cyclone Ditwah and the conflict in the Middle East, we have safeguarded the security of our overseas workers by upholding Sri Lanka’s longstanding humane and non-aligned foreign policy. At the same time, through effective responses to natural disasters, we have recorded notable economic progress in 2025. These include the lowest budget deficit since 1977 and the highest government revenue since 2007. Export earnings from goods and services exceeded USD 17 billion, making it the only year to surpass revenue targets while also recording the highest foreign remittances in our history. I extend the nation’s sincere gratitude to the working people whose contribution made these achievements possible.
Recognising the true value of labour, we have implemented policies to uplift working people. These include increasing public sector basic salaries, raising private sector minimum wages and granting pension rights to public servants recruited after 1 January 2016. Plantation workers’ wages have been increased to Rs. 1,750 and legal provisions relating to women’s night-time employment have been amended. The Mahapola scholarship has also been increased by Rs. 10,000 to support the education of workers’ children. In addition, we have extended benefits across society, including to farmers, fishers, youth, women, students, producers, small-scale entrepreneurs and plantation communities.
The recent Cyclone Ditwah most severely affected the working population. In response, we provided the highest disaster compensation in our history, alongside relief for farmers, fishers and small and medium-scale industries. Through the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” programme, we are expediting housing construction and restoring livelihoods, raising living standards beyond previous levels.
Our primary objective is to safeguard the rights of the working people in this nation and to create a more stable economy and a brighter future for our children, rather than allowing them to endure suffering, tears and pain. We acknowledge that it is essential to modernize human society, the economy, and production systems to align with the constantly evolving productive forces and the changing environment, making this a crucial task. Key initiatives include the proposed education reforms, the digital economy programme, the Clean Sri Lanka initiative and the ‘Prajashakthi’ programme.
As we strive to recover lost development and build “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life”, we place our confidence in the working people of Sri Lanka as the driving force of this journey. With that conviction, we continue to work while learning and learn while working, towards steady progress. I warmly invite all working people to join this collective effort with commitment and integrity in building a better nation and I extend my best wishes for a meaningful May Day.

Commemorating the Resurrection of Christ, Christian devotees in Sri Lanka and around the world celebrate Easter Sunday with deep reverence and devotion. It is a reminder of the enduring power of hope, renewal and compassion.
Beyond being a religious observance, Easter is also a cultural celebration for Christians that invites reflection on humanity, love and resilience. Through His Resurrection, having triumphed over death, Christ demonstrated to the world through His life that with steadfast determination and dedication, darkness can be overcome by light, fear by faith, and suffering by everlasting joy. The people who rose in unity for Jesus, who sacrificed His life for them, conveyed to the world a message of unity and goodwill.
At this moment, we cannot forget that people across the world continue to endure great suffering due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Instead of wars driven by hostility, people everywhere yearn for peace and coexistence. On this sacred Easter dawn, I pray that the path towards peace may be illuminated.
As taught by Christ, let us fill our hearts with love, patience and the noble virtue of forgiveness. Let us cast aside divisions and move forward together, bound in unity as children of one mother, as one Sri Lankan family. Let us join hands in brotherhood to achieve this.
On this sacred Easter Day, which commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, who sacrificed His life for the salvation of those in distress and overcame the darkness of death following His crucifixion, I extend my heartfelt wishes to all Christian devotees in Sri Lanka and around the world.
May you all be blessed with a joyful Easter filled with compassion and peace!

🙏🏼 Wishing you warm blessings on the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr 🌙✨
May this special day bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to all.
Eid Mubarak 🕌🌙
Eid-ul-Fitr, celebrated upon the sighting of the new moon following a month of fasting observed by Muslims across the world, is one of the most significant occasions in the Islamic religious calendar.
Fasting during Ramadan, which constitutes one of the five pillars of Islam, reflects the importance of distancing oneself from worldly desires and embracing a virtuous way of life founded on sacrifice and self-restraint.
The observance of Ramadan conveys a number of profound humanitarian and social messages to the global community. At its core, Ramadan instils compassion within the hearts of the faithful. It nurtures individuals who are willing to empathise with others, understand the pain of hunger as their own, and embrace fellow human beings with compassion and a spirit of brotherhood. During this period, the noble values of peace, equality and coexistence further enrich the conduct of believers. For an entire month, they observe the disciplines of fasting, a time devoted to spiritual nourishment. Therefore, I believe that the season of Ramadan serves as a powerful lesson to the world in humanity and brotherhood through lived example.
This year's Eid-ul-Fitr is being observed at a time when the entire world is facing difficult and challenging circumstances. I sincerely pray that, through the blessings of the observances and prayers of this Ramadan, these challenges will soon subside, giving rise to a world that all aspire to, one in which the rights and freedoms of all are safeguarded, and where peace, prosperity and harmonious coexistence prevail.
As we have successfully overcome challenges in the past, we remain firmly committed, as a government, to confronting this challenge with courage, managing it effectively, and ensuring that the country's economy and the lives of its people continue to progress without hardship or disruption.
Setting aside differences, I call upon everyone to unite with this national effort and extend their steadfast support. I convey my heartfelt wishes to the Muslim community in Sri Lanka and around the world for a peaceful and harmonious Eid-ul-Fitr.
Eid Mubarak!
