Socialist Movement of Ghana | Fighting for equality, justice, and the liberation of all women | Centered in Marxist principles & Pan-African solidarity
We honor the memory of Major-General Barwah, who was murdered in cold blood for his courageous refusal to join the shame act on 24th February, 1966.
#Nkrumahneverdies#Ghanadayofshame
Tuesday, 24 February 2026 marks 60 years since the #CIA-backed #coup that overthrew Ghana’s greatest #Pan-Africanist leader, #Kwame#Nkrumah. The #SMG marks “Ghana’s Day of Shame” with a public forum: “Imperialism on the Rampage.”
Join us, 4:30pm at SMG HQ, Accra.
#DAY OF SHAME!
Tuesday, February 24, 2026, will be exactly 60 years after the overthrow of the Nkrumah government in a coup sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States of America (USA).
For close to 30 years, the day has been marked as “Ghana’s Day of Shame” by the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG).
This year, the SMG is marking the day with a public forum under the theme “60 Years After Ghana’s Day Of Shame: Imperialism On The Rampage”.
The forum will be chaired by Professor Ekua Britwum, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and a member of the Advisory Council of the SMG.
The speakers will be Dhuruba Bin Wahad, a leader of Black Panther Party of the United States of America and me.
It will take place at the headquarters of the SMG on the George Walker Bush Highway, next door to the NogahillHotel in Accra from 4:30pm.
The General Public is cordially invited.
#SHOCK
I was really shocked when a friend sent the post below to me on “Ghana Today”.
“Dampare was a coloured TV, Yohunu is black and white. Unfortunately, Ghanaians have to watch the black and white for another 2 years without a remote - Kwesi Pratt, Jnr”.
Why would anybody do this? Fabricate words and put them in my mouth.
I say emphatically that I have not made these statements anywhere and the post should be ignored.
I have a great deal of respect for both Dr. Dampare and IGP Yohunu.
#POSTPONED
The International conference to mark the 80th anniversary of the 5th Pan African Congress in 1945 has been postponed from October 19 to 21, 2025 to November 18 to 20, 2025 in Accra.
The organizers, the Progressive Peoples Front (#PPF) say the postponement is to enable the participation of President John Dramani Mahama(@JDMahama), President of the Republic of Ghana, and the African Union’s Champion on Reparations.
So far, mass organizations from more than 40 African countries including trade unions, political parties, youth and students’ organizations as well as women’s movements have confirmed participation.
#NKRUMAH
Last week, I got a four-page written document by Professor Francis Kwesi Nkrumah, the first son of the Founder of the Modern Republic of Ghana.
He titled this very revealing article which has never been published ‘The February 1966 Coup”.
It tells the story of special moments in Ghana’s history and reveals the depth of Professor Francis Nkrumah himself.
I have obtained the necessary permissions and will publish this very interesting but short piece in “The Insight” newspaper and on various websites of The Insight and Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) by the end of this week.
It will be published under the headline; “Nkrumah’s Son, A Story And Moments In Our History”.
TUC MEET SMG
The leadership of the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) of Ghana (@TucGhana) and the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) (@SocialistGhana) met in Accra yesterday to review and renew the very healthy relations between the two organizations.
The two organizations affirmed their commitment to debt cancellation in #Africa and countries of the South and pledged their full support to the international efforts to boost support for all the trade unions engaged in this campaign.
They agreed to share information on the impact of the debt burden on African economies and to create joint platforms for mass agitation against the continent’s odious debt.
The TUC and the SMG have over the last 10 years cooperated on mass education projects and organized campaigns against the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana, (#ECG) and the imposition of levies on sanitary pads.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Joshua Ansah Secretary-General of the TUC said the collaboration between the two organizations has been very fruitful.
He called for the intensification of the political education programme at the Amilcar Cabral School run by the SMG.
Comrade Kyeretwie Opoku, Convener of the SMG reaffirmed the commitments of his movement to the interests of the working people.
BY THE WAY
Did you see President John Dramani Mahama’s (@JDMahama) delegation on his trip to Singapore?
Were you struck by what members of the delegation wore?
Amazing, they were all in well-cut European business suits.
What a way to project and promote #Ghana?

#DESTROYERS
Those who want to destroy President John Dramani Mahama (@JDMahama) are not just those who are waging a campaign against his person, policies, and actions.
They include those who are asking him to play God.
These are the people who insist that without him #Ghana will collapse and to prevent that from happening, the 1992 constitution should be amended to enable him to run for a third term.
The point they make is that President John Dramani #Mahama is the only one amongst the 32million people of Ghana who has leadership qualities.
This is most certainly an insult to the people of Ghana and the President Mahama I know will not encourage it.
The mark of a good leader is the ability to mentor people to follow in his or her path and the challenge for President Mahama is to prepare somebody to take over his duties after he leaves office on January 7, 2029.
History teaches us all that leaders who attempt to deify their rule eventually get cast into the dustbin of rotten governance.
The doctrine of the divine rule of kings has no place in governance in #2025.
#THIRD TERM
It is difficult to escape the cacophony of calls for the amendment of the 1992 #Constitution to make it possible for President John Dramani Mahama (@JDMahama) to contest elections for a third term.
I am deeply worried by this development because I am keenly aware of the lessons of history which teach that this apparent orchestration can only lead to total disaster for everybody.
General Kutu #Acheampong’s government was undoubtedly one of the best since independence.
It was fully committed to the national liberation struggle throughout Africa. It made Ghana self-sufficient in food production in its first few years. It built estate houses for workers everywhere. It generally improved national infrastructure and was very popular until the dying years of the 1970s.
Acheampong’s popularity took a nose-dive when he sought to introduce the Union Government idea, and the general perception was that he wanted to extend his stay in power indefinitely.
The resistance was massive and crucial state resources were diverted from production and put into useless charm projects. The economy suffered.
Acheampong became very unpopular and in the end, he and some of his associates paid a very high price with their lives.
We should not forget that #history has a way of repeating itself.
The suggestion that out of 35 million citizens of Ghana, only one person can be a good President is extremely foolish and must not be encouraged.
I have known President #Mahama for a very long time, and I am convinced that he is not power-hungry but his silence on this issue only encourages those who seek to misuse his popularity and apparent good work.
I encourage the President to speak out against the agitation from very strange sources to make him the #KingOfGhana.
#PESSEY
Sometime last month, we laid our comrade Dr David Pessey to rest in a solemn ceremony which interestingly included a church service because it was the wish of his family.
Since then, I have been pondering over the true essence of the life of a very dedicated #comrade whose fidelity to Marxism and #revolutionary ethos remains unshaken.
I am rediscovering Dr David Eccles Nii Laate #Pessey through his own #words and here are a few;
1. On #Nkrumah’s Legacy
“The most important aspect of Nkrumah was his belief, his faith in the capacity of ordinary people. He understood that if we had self-belief, there was nothing we could not do as a people. Anything others have done – we can do- and can surpass”.
2. On Historical Distortions
“For 48 years, they have tried to erase #Nkrumah from #history and rewrite it with #criminals as our #heroes”.
3. On #African #Sovereignty
“It is common knowledge that if we have a problem and we have to discuss it, we find that foreigners will have a seat at the table because some of them have a permanent #interest in our backwardness”.
May Comrade David Pessey continue to inspire us.
#NKRUMAH
Perhaps it will be useful if the #Mahama (@JDMahama) administration listened to #Osagyefo Dr #Kwame#Nkrumah for a change in its handling of the 10% trade #tariffs imposed on #Ghana’s #exports to the #UnitedStates of #America.
In a speech in the #UN General Assembly in #NewYork on September 23, 1960, #Nkrumah said “only #Africa can fight for its destiny. In this struggle we shall not reject the assistance and support of our friends, but we will yield to no #enemy, however strong”
#PAN – AFRICANISM
Pan #Africanism is not just about the #unity of #Africans everywhere, it is essentially the unity of the African people in #struggle against #imperialism and for #socialism.
It is about the struggles of the African #people to #free themselves from the colonial yoke and its new form of neo-colonialism.
Cut to its bare essence, Pan Africanism is about the right of African people to choose their own #leaders and the system of #government they want, the #ownership of their #resources, and the exploitation of these resources for their benefit.
The principles of #land to the tillers and those who work ought to be the beneficiaries of what they produce are also Pan-Africanism.
DON’T #TAX MY PERIOD #CAMPAIGN
Comrade Loretta and her comrades in the #Women’s Wing of the #Socialist Movement of #Ghana (SMG) are worthy of tons of commendation for initiating the “Don’t Tax My Period Campaign”. A campaign for the removal of taxes on sanitary products for women.
It is instructive that the @JDMahama administration has gone a step further by providing #free sanitary products for #girls in the #second cycles schools.
There are many more #battles ahead and together, we shall win!
