The Government of Alberta says most of the newly announced schools in Edmonton will be built in fast-growing neighbourhoods on the outer edges of the city to address rising enrolment.
Under the province’s 2026 budget, funding has been allocated for eight new schools and two replacement schools in Edmonton. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says the projects are needed because Alberta’s population surge in recent years has placed heavy pressure on school divisions.
Plans include four new schools for Edmonton Public Schools: K-9 schools in Aster, River’s Edge, and Stillwater, plus a K-6 school in Crystallina Nera. Edmonton Catholic Schools will add a new K-9 school in Kirkness and a high school in Glenridding Heights serving the Windermere area, along with a replacement at the St. Alphonsus site.
Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord will receive two new schools and one replacement school, including one replacing École Jean-Claude Mahé.
The projects are expected to create more than 8,400 student spaces, mostly from newly built schools. The developments are currently in planning or design, with typical construction timelines of about four to five years.
Westmount Centre, Edmonton’s first shopping centre, is set to be redeveloped into an outdoor retail plaza. Owner First Capital REIT announced plans to transform the middle section of the mall by adding exterior entrances, new retail space, landscaping, and pedestrian connections. Construction is expected to begin next month and take about 18 to 24 months.
The mall originally opened in 1955 as the outdoor Westmount Shoppers Park before being enclosed in 1966. The redevelopment will remove part of the building, including the section that once housed a movie theatre, effectively returning the centre to an outdoor-style shopping layout.
Today we announced 16 brand new school projects in our smaller cities and rural areas across Alberta, on top of 63 already underway outside Calgary and Edmonton. Parents know our classrooms have to keep pace with a fast growing province, and if Budget 2026 is passed it will fund the new spaces we need to reduce crowding now and keep class sizes stable into the future.
