He knowingly buried the truth, whitewashed the procurement irregularities, and betrayed his murdered subordinate's legacy. With private admissions damning him and a clean public report shielding corrupt officials, Rakgwale is not merely an incompetent bureaucrat—he is complicit in a cover-up that followed a whistleblower's death, and must face arrest for his role in this conspiracy.

South Africa records 4,638 kidnappings in Q2 as murders decline

South Africa has recorded 4,638 kidnappings between April and June 2026, with Gauteng accounting for more than half of all reported cases, according to the latest SAPS quarterly crime statistics released on Friday. Kidnappings rose 3.9% year on year, 172 more cases than in the same period in 2025 even as murders fell nationally.

Gauteng logged 2,367 kidnappings in the three months. KwaZulu-Natal recorded 887 and the Western Cape 269. Police have previously said a large share of Gauteng cases are linked to hijackings and robberies, not classic ransom abductions. Under South African law, kidnapping is unlawfully depriving someone of their freedom, so a victim held or moved against their will during another crime can still be counted in the kidnapping total. Ransom, extortion, sexual offences, and trafficking cases form part of the same category.

Murders declined 5.9% over the same quarter, from 5,770 to 5,427 — 343 fewer killings than a year earlier. Gauteng still recorded the most murders at 1,276, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (1,179), the Western Cape (1,071), and the Eastern Cape (1,047). Adjusted for population, the Eastern Cape had the highest murder rate at 15.8 per 100,000 people, then the Western Cape at 13.9. Contact crime overall fell 2.3%, and carjacking dropped 18.2% nationally, though Gauteng remained the carjacking hotspot with 2,207 incidents.

The kidnapping increase sits against years of elevated numbers and public concern over organised syndicates targeting businesspeople, children, and foreign nationals. Police say specialised anti-kidnapping units and joint operations have rescued victims and made arrests, but the raw quarterly total, more than 50 cases a day nationally, and more than half of those in Gauteng shows the problem remains large. SAPS also recorded 519 extortion cases in the quarter, with Gauteng taking the biggest share. The next quarterly release will show whether the kidnapping trend keeps rising or starts to turn.

On 26 June 2025, Ekurhuleni’s own Chief Audit Executive, Phillip Rakgwale, signed a report finding the R1.8bn toilet tender’s bid evaluation was unfair and non-compliant. One day later same reference number, same recipients he signed a memo saying the opposite: no issues found. Three days after that reversal, chief auditor Mpho Mafole, the man named in the first report as point of contact, was assassinated. Fourteen months on, no one has explained what changed in those 24 hours, and no one has been arrested for the corruption angle at all only a triggerman, for the shooting itself.

Every institution meant to answer that question has failed its own mandate. SAPS is constitutionally bound under s.205(3) to investigate crime, yet has never publicly closed the gap between the hitman it arrested and the money trail sitting in its own province’s audit department while News24 has reported officials actively obstructing the case. The Hawks, built precisely for serious organised corruption, are instead a subject of Madlanga Commission testimony describing a decade of political interference gutting the unit from within. The NPA’s independence is guaranteed under s.179(4) so it can prosecute power without fear or favour yet that independence sits unused here. And the Madlanga Commission, for all its real work exposing 40 ignored forensic reports and years of interference, cannot compel a single arrest. Four Zimbabwean Nationals Arrested in Hartbeespoort After Security Officers Track Suspected Railway Cable Theft Vehicle and Intercept It on R511 at Meerhof

Four suspected railway cable thieves were arrested in Hartbeespoort after security officers tracked their vehicle and coordinated an interception on the R511 at Meerhof.

The suspects, comprising three men and a woman, are all Zimbabwean nationals and are believed to be linked to railway infrastructure and cable theft in Rustenburg. Security officers intercepted the vehicle following the tracking operation.

A search recovered cash, heavy-duty bolt cutters and industrial work gear. The four suspects were handed over to police for further investigation. No further details were provided about the circumstances surrounding the alleged thefts or the identities of the suspects.
