My grandmother used to make a batch of my favorite applesauce chocolate chip cookies every year for my birthday. She soon learned to make two batches… One to leave in the kitchen, where my sisters would make short work of it, and the other to sneak up the stairs to my room, where I hid them under my bed and quietly ate them by myself with the door closed over the next few days. One of my favorite memories of her!

My Mom, Joleen Meredith (who passed away on Friday) wrote the music for the hymn “Where Can I Turn for Peace.” The story behind the hymn is an interesting one. Learn more here:

Our Mom, Joleen Meredith passed on today. She went quickly and it was a tender mercy. She was a remarkable woman. A gifted composer, writer, decorator, and mental health advocate, she was an absolute dynamo. Most of my musical success, I can trace directly to her. Godspeed Mom!

@darthcaro I know you didn’t mean it this way, but have you tried actual Western shows? Not so much the modern ones (a little too sweary for me) but the old ones (Bonanza, Gunsmoke, High Chaparral) are a pretty awesome throwback.

Yep. I had the same realization about my Grandpa. Born in 1899. Just missed fighting in WWI. Lost family to the Spanish Flu Epidemic. Remembered well the first car in American Fork and kids lining up for a ride. Remembered the first radio and TV in town. Rode in a biplane and a jet. Saw men ride the rails in the depression and saw men land on the moon. A remarkable span for a remarkable man.

We finished the drive home from Mount Rushmore by stopping at Martin’s Cove, where the LDS church runs a visitor’s center to commemorate the Willie and Martin Handcart Companies. It is a stark reminder of the faith and fortitude of those early saints. Blessed, honored pioneers!
