🎁A great chemist has left us: Yitzhak Apeloig @YitzhakApeloig passed away on May 28.
Born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan—his parents were Polish Jews who had fled their home when the Germans invaded Poland in 1939—he came to Israel with his family in 1947. He studied chemistry and physics at the Hebrew Univ. of Jerusalem and obtained a PhD in chemistry in 1974 working with Zvi Rappoport. He continued research in #PhysicalOrganicChemistry as a postdoc with the legendary Paul von Rague Schleyer @LMU_Muenchen and @Princeton Univ. There he became familiar with #ComputationalChemistry that he continued when he started his independent career at the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology @TechnionLive in 1976. He has been loyal to this eminent place until today and even served as its President from 2001 until 2009.
Apeloig’s experimental and theoretical studies of #ReactiveIntermediates, #StrainedMolecules, and #organosilicon species are masterpieces and results have become textbook knowledge. Among the many honors he received were the ICS Gold Medal, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Award, the Wacker Silicone Award, and ACS Frederic Stanley Kipping Award in Silicon Chemistry. He was a member of Academia Europaea, and he received an Honorary Doctorate from Technische Universität Berlin.
