I’ll admit there was a little cowardice in this comparison: originally I used a Crye Precision carrier. I just don’t wanna be up all night fighting all the gear accounts.

I started with 5.11’s flagship TacTec® carrier, then filled the gaps in its ecosystem with Krydex components from Amazon the same thing any customer could realistically do. The placard was surprisingly difficult to find, and there still wasn’t a true equivalent to our RECCE rig adapter, so I used the closest substitute available.

I also gave 5.11 and Krydex every benefit of the doubt. I assumed bonded thread, reinforced stitching and comparable construction quality wherever I couldn’t independently confirm them.

The result:

5.11/Crydex setup: $387.44
Väkärián package: $240

The Väkärián includes the adjustable-height placard, 5.56 and 7.62 inserts, retention tabs, TQ holder, shoulder pads, H-harness and RECCE rig adapter out of the box.

Normally, Väkärián gets compared with Crye, Spiritus, Ferro, TYR and Agilite, which remains an enormous compliment. This time, I wanted a closer one-for-one price comparison against brands working with a more comparable overseas labor structure. Again, I don’t work out of China, not even for my raw materials.
