Of special importance to the legacy of Black Queer August is the commemoration of the Bedford Hills Uprising.
On the night of August 29, 1927, approximately 200 incarcerated women seized control of 2 buildings and the yard at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.
Queering Black August has a few meanings for us. We do this in the spirit of gratitude for all Black freedom fighters & give special thanks for the space Black LGBTQ folks in history have made for us to do our work as Black LGBTQ people today fighting for liberation in the South
Kwame Ture: "You vote once in four years, and that’s your political responsibility? That’s the height of bourgeois propaganda, making the people politically irresponsible. Thinking their responsibility is limited to a one day vote. Politics is every day."
To be an organizer is to commit to the contradictions. Liberation doesn't mean we will no longer have contradictions just not as dire. The contradiction we have upon us is which partt will give us a better terrain to fight. Bc we will have to fight either way
UPDATE: A representative of the solidarity fund reached out to say that in light of the preliminary injunction against SB 63 Section 4, it will continue operating as usual and not end its bail operations.
We're not going to let this ruling keep us out of the streets or divide us along lines of "good" and "bad" protestors. When we buy into their binaries, we allow efforts to criminalize dissent to fester and grow.
