She was 29 years old when a soldier pointed a gun at her chest.

It was May 11, 1945, in the village of Sobotín, just four days after the war in Europe had officially ended. While much of the world was celebrating peace, Sister Paschalis Jahn was facing a nightmare. A Soviet Red Army soldier cornered her and demanded her submission. When she refused, he shot her through the heart.

Sister Paschalis was one of ten Catholic nuns from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth who were murdered in similar circumstances during those chaotic months. Founded in 1810, the order had a simple mission: care for the people society ignored. They ran hospitals, tended the elderly, nursed the dying, and sheltered war orphans.

When the Eastern Front collapsed in early 1945, Soviet troops pushed deep into Silesia. Violence and looting followed. Those who could flee headed west. The sisters had a choice: run, or stay. Their patients were bedridden. The elderly could not walk. The children had nowhere else to go.
So they stayed.

Each of the ten met the danger with courage.

Sister Acutina, a peasant’s daughter who taught orphans, was shot in an open field while putting her body between young girls and a group of drunken soldiers. Sister Edelburgis, a 40-year-old nurse, was beaten and shot inside a chapel while trying to shield her fellow sisters. The remaining seven — Sisters Melusja, Adela, Adelheidis, Felicitas, Rosaria, Sabina, and Sapientia — were killed in the same pattern: they stood their ground to protect their vows and the people in their care.

For decades, their deaths were buried in silence. After the war, Poland fell under communist control. Because the Red Army was officially celebrated as the liberator, speaking about its wartime crimes was forbidden. The congregation estimated that more than one hundred of its sisters were killed by Soviet soldiers. Those stories had to stay hidden.

The silence began to lift after 1989. Records opened. The truth could finally be told. That long road ended in a beatification ceremony at the cathedral in Wrocław, where all ten women were declared Blessed.

Their story is a reminder that history repeats itself when uncomfortable truths are set aside for political convenience. For three generations, the bodies of these protectors were covered by silence. The uniforms change. The decades pass. The assault on the vulnerable does not.

Honoring these sisters means facing a harder truth: the danger is not only the soldier with the gun. It is also the silence that lets the same violence happen to women and children in conflict zones today.
