PRT's Board of Directors voted on Friday, October 23rd to close the Wabash tunnel to all traffic on December 1st, 2026.
“The Wabash Tunnel has a long history in Pittsburgh, but today it primarily serves private vehicle traffic rather than public transit,” said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman. “With an estimated $43 million needed to rehabilitate the tunnel, we have a responsibility to focus our limited resources on the infrastructure that is most critical to delivering safe, reliable transit service.”
To remain open long-term, the Wabash tunnel would require significant rehabilitation to critical safety components including lighting, ventilation, fire suppression, and electrical systems, which are in poor to critical condition and have exceeded their useful life.
The Wabash tunnel primarily serves private vehicle traffic to about 1,500 vehicles a day. PRT no longer provides regular transit through the tunnel except for detours.
