On May 27, Dr. Akiko Horiba, director of the Center for Mediation Support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, spoke at the East Asia Gender Equality Forum in Taipei, Taiwan, organized by the Foundation for Women’s Rights Promotion and Development. She introduced the Center for Mediation Support, delivered a keynote speech on the importance of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) in East Asia, and held discussions with practitioners and experts from Taiwan and South Korea working in the WPS field.

SPF Holds an Exchange of Views on Maritime Affairs with Director General Kristi Land
On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation welcomed Director General Kristi Land of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, along with other senior officials, and held an exchange of views in the field of the law of the sea. The meeting was attended by Senior Fellow Atsuko Kanehara and other experts, who shared perspectives on maritime affairs from an international standpoint.
On May 13, staff members of the Center for Mediation Support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, together with senior government officials and practitioners visiting Tokyo at the invitation of the SPF, attended a study session with Members of Parliament. They exchanged views on the current status and challenges in peace mediation. The delegation also held discussions on Middle Eastern affairs with CMS Fellows, drawing on their diverse regional and thematic expertise.

On May 13, SPF held a public symposium to commemorate the establishment of the Center for Mediation Support, titled “Peace Mediation in an Age of Conflict.” Senior government officials from countries that prioritize peace mediation as a key diplomatic issue, along with NGO practitioners with extensive experience in the field, shared their insights and engaged in lively discussions with participants on the role of dialogue and mediation in today’s conflict‑prone world. SPF remains committed to advancing Japan’s unique role in promoting peace through mediation.
