What’s really hiding in your soil? 🔬
SPIN-FERT is developing a new tool that helps detect nematodes from microscopic images. Upload individual or batch images to analyze samples and estimate the presence of parasitic nematodes with greater speed and precision.

🌱 Exploring beneficial microbes for stronger, more resilient crops This summer, Niab will be investigating whether beneficial microbes can help improve plant resilience when lettuce is grown in recycled and virgin coir under a fertigation deficit.
#soil#horticulture
🌱 Sustainable growing media in focus
At @Niab, we’ve been exploring how recycled coir performs as a growing medium compared with virgin coir in lettuce production.

THE TECHNOLOGY
🔬 Real-time sensing at the microscale
The team at @CNR NANO developed a QCM-D platform: the QSense E4.
This system relies on piezoelectric quartz crystals that oscillate at specific resonance frequencies.

Bioacoustics of plants 🎧🌱
Carmelo Cannarella (@CNR-ISB) engaged the class in detecting audio signals and "sounds" generated through the plants. Using electrodes, students listened to plant signals—revealing how crops respond to stress vs. abundance.
On April 28, 2026, the National Research Council (CNR) research area in Montelibretti (Rome) became an open-air laboratory—bringing science directly into the field! High school students collaborated with researchers, engaging in real experiments rather than passive observation.
On April 22, at Macfrut, Ri.Nova organized a joint workshop in collaboration with ENEA and CINSA titled “Soil Health. Innovations for Sustainable Cropping Systems. Research Meets Industry” in which 50 people participated. #SoilQuality#OrganicFertilisers#RiNova
🌍🌱 SPIN-FERT at Earth Day in Torino: Soil, Memory, and Collective Awareness
On Saturday, April 25, SPIN-FERT joined the celebrations of Giornata della Terra in Torino, hosted in the beautiful Royal Palace of Turin Gardens. Organised around Earth Day (April 22), #EarthDay
