This music video took 5 years to make. When the world shut down I decided to try writing and directing an animated music video even though I couldn’t draw whatsoever AND make it feel authentically cel animated…how hard could it be?

"Batman Beyond" character designer Glenn Wong recently worked on this newly-released music video, "Spirit Jumper," an animation project that took 5 years to complete!

@Film_Contrarian@ani_obsessive not even a lukewarm take - just a fact BUT hopefully Spirit Jumper is proof that with an understanding of the techniques it can still be recreated digitally with the right amount of effort
This style of light doesn't really appear in animation anymore. You know it when you see it -- it's bright, hot and almost dangerous.
Our new issue explores the tricks behind it, and how one artist has revived the look for the digital age:

Fantastic breakdown over at @ani_obsessive of how to digitally emulate an analog style light glow by @SPKTRASPKTRA
Lots of similarities with work we've been doing in https://t.co/qPUTK0JBjz

I wrote an article on my favorite substack, Animation Obsessive about the research and technique that went into making the light in Spirit Jumper

Created by @SPKTRASPKTRA - this hand-made music video for his track "Spirit Jumper" is a throwback to 90s cel animation style. Looks gorgeous! Song is legit! This music video is definitely worth a watch. #animation
Did an interview with @cartoonbrew about the 5 year production behind Spirit Jumper. Looking back through my research notes, I had a number of interviews they’d done over the years so it was an honor to be interviewed at all on the website. https://t.co/bAiJlqvyXl
The result is a meticulous attempt to nail the feel of hand-drawn animation through light, timing, color, and texture, what spktra calls “a tremendous labor of love.” Read our full breakdown and see the whole video here: https://t.co/6EAgqaaVmP
Working entirely independently, spktra wrote, directed, edited, colored, and composited the film himself, collaborating with just two animators and a veteran 'Batman Beyond' character designer to nail the video's '90s cel animation aesthetic.
Exclusive: Electronic musician and self-taught animator spktra spent five years making the video for "Spirit Jumper," built to feel like a dialogue-free short film rather than a visual accompaniment to the music.

3/3 The goal wasn’t just to mimic a style, but to capture that feeling you have when you watch old animation. We pulled it off and couldn’t be more proud of how it came out.

2/3 Painstaking detail went into researching the effects of film on animation, in camera optical effects, the effects of xerography on the lines, the difference cel paint made in color choices and so many more things (more to come on all of that later).
