It’s Myeloma awareness week.
Myeloma is a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. It mainly affects those over the age of 65, however, it has been diagnosed in people much younger.
Myeloma develops when DNA is damaged during the development of a plasma cell. This abnormal cell then starts to multiply and spread within the bone marrow. Unlike many cancers, myeloma does not exist as a lump or tumour.
During the screening itself, the healthcare professional will take a sample of cells from your cervix which are sent off to a laboratory for testing. It is a quick, painless test although it can be a little uncomfortable. You will receive the results in a few weeks.
This week is Cervical screening awareness week. Cervical screening (having a smear test) is offered to all women aged 25-64 every 5 years. These invites should be sent out automatically by the NHS app, but if you believe you are due & haven’t yet been contacted, please contact us
