Shares of Viking Therapeutics fell as much as 37% after Phase 2 VENTURE-Oral trial results for its oral obesity drug, while LLY rose 1.5% on perceived competitive advantages.
Viking’s oral tablet VK2735, a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist, met its primary endpoint with up to 12.2% weight loss after 13 weeks vs. 1.3% for placebo. However, a 28% discontinuation rate vs. 18% for placebo raised concerns.
Mizuho’s Jared Holz ($8411.T) said results look weaker than LLY across metrics, noting LLY showed ~20% dropout over 72 weeks, making it more favorable. Holz argued VKTX likely won’t be a major near-term player in oral obesity drugs, adding that stronger pipelines or better formulations are needed.
