Black Sabbath played their first gig together at a small club in Birmingham, England, July 12, 1968..

Long before they were selling out stadiums and basically inventing heavy metal, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward were just four working-class guys from the neighborhood looking for any gig they could get. On this particular night, they hauled their gear upstairs at The Crown pub on Station Street and plugged in for a raw, loud set of heavy blues.

What's wild about this early chapter is that they hadn’t even come up with their legendary name yet. They actually took the stage that night as the Polka Tulk Blues Band, which they quickly swapped for Earth before finally settling on Black Sabbath the next year. They had absolutely no clue that Tony's heavy, down-tuned riffs and Ozzy's haunting voice were laying the groundwork for a completely new genre of music. It’s an incredible snapshot of rock history—capturing four broke kids from an industrial factory town right before they went out and conquered the world.

A rally will be held in Lower Manhattan after carriage horse owners blocked a city-approved veterinarian from examining their horses.

The rally will be held outside City Hall at noon. City officials say it was illegal for carriage horse owners to refuse the exams.

The city hired the independent equine veterinarian to conduct basic health and welfare examinations, including trotting horses to assess lameness and blood testing for drugs. Despite the horses being denied access to these exams, the veterinarian still flagged signs of possible neglect.
