Somanatha: The Shrine Eternal
K. M. Munshi, the famous Gujarati statesman and litterateur, summarized the civilizational value of Somanatha for millions of Indians when he described his temple as the Shrine Eternal on the occasion of its reconsecration in 1951.
It is eternal as it stands for the sanatan spirit of Indians that rises valorously against external forces of dimwitted tyranny and bigotry. It is an ever-luminous shrine that Indians carry within their hearts and draw strength from in tumultuous times.
The reconstruction of the temple began immediately after India won its freedom in 1947. On a visit to the ruins of the previous temple, Sardar Ballabhbhai Patel was deeply moved. He envisioned building a grand new edifice that would revitalize the people who had recently thrown off the shackles of foreign rule after a long and arduous battle. The reconstruction was complete within four short years. Rajendra Prasad consecrated the temple in 1951 and instilled confidence in the people to take full ownership of the process of national rebuilding.
Those who chose to remain away from the reconstruction of Somanatha can hardly said to have had a deep connection with the vast multitudes of India and their cultural aspirations. History has not judged them kindly. Dams are important. They helped re-build India’s economy. But then, India is not an economy alone. It is a nation with a long continuous civilizational heritage that goes far and far back into history.
India’s journey from the consecration of the temple of Somanatha in 1951 to the pran-pratishthaof the temple of Raghunatha in 2024 is a story of an incredible people growing ever closer to their own civilizational heritage! Let us not forget that this embrace of our own heritage has not been easy. From the colonial times onwards, India’s heritage stands, as it were, in a court of judgment. Indians are continuously either passing harsh judgments on their own civilization, or looking for grounds to mount defense of its values and accomplishments. In its true sense, embrace of civilizational heritage moves beyond these modes of relating to our past. We embrace it all - the sorrows as well as the triumphs.
Embrace of India’s civilizational heritage is a political project. It is a political project because it enables us to reconstruct an Indic vocabulary to make sense of the world around us. This does not mean that we move away from the modern global world. Rather it means that we find an Indic way of inhabiting this modern global world. It means we find our ways of belonging to India.
Somanatha, the Eternal Shrine, inspires us to re-imagine India now and in the centuries to come.

The statement of Hon'ble Union Minister of Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan in 'Study in India Edu-Diplomatic Conclave' Education remains the most enduring bridge between societies in a world marked by uncertainty and rapid change' in a way is a message to all academic administrators on the imperative of not merely being conscious of the changing dynamics of the world but the need to factor them in teaching learning processes.
Congratulations to the Hon'ble Minister for conceptualizing a unique Edu-Diplomatic conclave and asserting the need for collaboration to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
In a span of less than ten days, India demonstrated its leadership at the global stage in the domain of international trade.
The two Trade agreements, one with the European Union, which EU itself calls 'Mother of all Deals' and yesterday's agreement with the US - a deal between the world's oldest and largest democracies assert India's capabilities and competitiveness in manufacturing goods and providing services.
It also showcases the visionary leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister and his strategic long-term thinking with his eyes on the big picture. These trade agreements will further strengthen ‘Make in India’ and pave the way for unprecedented economic growth and academic-industry collaboration.
For generations, the story of India creating win-win scenarios and endearing itself the warring trade polarities of the World will be a case-study for future world leaders. Polarities do find a meeting point if we have clever leadership.
Congratulations to Modi Ji and Jai Bharath
