Even if it had to get a favorable/ out-of-turn land allotment to setup a centre, what justification is there for it not to pay the market price of land?

And then people, including those running tech companies, talk against 'freebies' like giving cheap rice to the poor or cycles to girls so that they can continue their education

Never mind that all these companies got nearly free land - usually far in excess of their actual requirements. Not to mention the tax holiday.

It is all in the framing of what is 'reform' and what is not, as I detailed in this piece in @moneycontrolcom last year.

In short this is the lens through which the privileged see the world:

Corporate tax reduction = Reform
Capital gains tax cut = Reform
Near free land to industry = Reform
Near free IIT/govt Engineering College/ University education = My birthright

Free/subsidized food to the poor = Fiscal profligacy
Free healthcare = Revadi
Reservations = Anti-merit

Simply put: anything that benefits the privileged is classified under Reform whereas anything benefiting the under privileged, even if it is in health & education without which the country/economy can't prosper, is 'a waste of taxpayer money', Anti-merit etc

All the people who got heavily subsidized education in Universities, IITs and IIMs, esp those who went abroad & didn't even pay taxes in India to compensate...have their knickers in a twist because women who travel in buses are getting a subsidy or someone is getting free food.
