Part of our responsibility as Scouts and as responsible mariners is to keep our waterways clean. So when we can lend a hand removing pollutants from our waters, we love to do so!

Sometimes sailing concepts are a little easier to master on a smaller vessel. Our youth have access to small boats & this boat, dubbed the Sonar, which is being prepped for an afternoon of sailing & learning under the tutelage of our small boat sailing expert, Captain Kiesel.
First, the surface is prepped. If just another coat is needed, it is a hand sanded. However, sometimes we need to start with a clean slate so we use a sander or a heat gun to remove the old varnish & start the process of apply 5-6 coats of beautifully fresh varnish.

Before and after! This weekend our youth put in some excellent effort toward maintaining our brightwork! (Brightwork is sailor speak for any wood on board that is only protected by varnish or exposed metal that needs to be polished.)
