I genuinely used to like this boy’s content, particularly his consistent commentary on insecurity and his advocacy for interfaith harmony. That is why I find his current position deeply disappointing.

Watching him join those rushing to defend this grave allegation, while deliberately introducing a religious dimension into the case involving Senator Shehu Buba, is disheartening. A serious national security matter should not be reduced to another episode of religious sentiment and tribal solidarity.

For decades, the North has known that the men carrying weapons and terrorising communities do not operate alone. There are financiers, facilitators, suppliers and networks behind them. The Bello Turjis, Dogo Gides, Shekaus and countless others responsible for the bloodshed in our communities require resources to sustain their operations.

That is why as a northerner the allegations of terrorism financing is one that atleast you should try not to defend anyone about it, especially when credible evidences are presented. This is not a petty allegation or a dispute over stolen property. We are talking about a crime capable of sustaining an entire ecosystem of violence.

If credible evidence has been presented against anyone, the appropriate response should be at the very least to interrogate the evidence, demand a transparent investigation and allow due process to take its course. It should not be an instinctive rush to defend the accused simply because of religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.

What makes this allegation particularly deserving of scrutiny is the claim came from someone who reportedly lived with and had close access to the accused, alongside references to ammunition, international passports and other alleged incriminating material in the videos released.

Our inability to hold “our own” accountable has become one of the greatest impediments to confronting insecurity in the North.

We are truly our own primary problem, the government is secondary.
