Malawian Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Pledges 10 Buses for Repatriation of Stranded Nationals from South Africa
Controversial Malawian preacher and businessman Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has announced plans to provide 10 buses to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Malawian nationals currently in South Africa.
Bushiri made the announcement on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, stating that preparations were underway to transport affected citizens back home. "Preparing 10 buses to go and get our people in South Africa. Let's stand together and help our people," he posted, drawing on his own past experiences living in the country.
The initiative comes amid heightened tensions and an ongoing immigration crackdown in South Africa, which has seen thousands of Malawians, many gathered at sites like Sherwood Park in Durban seeking to return home.
Anti-immigrant sentiments and enforcement actions have left many stranded, with some sleeping outdoors for days or weeks. The Malawian government has already facilitated limited repatriations, including groups of around 150 to 980 nationals in recent days, but has appealed for donations due to funding constraints for transporting an estimated 10,000 citizens.
Authorities have emphasised that the process is orderly and involves verification of all individuals who wish to board the buses. Bushiri's contribution is seen as a significant boost to these efforts, supplementing government-led operations.
Bushiri, leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (The Jesus Nation Church), remains a polarising figure in South Africa due to past fraud charges from which he fled the country in 2020. His latest gesture has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the humanitarian aid while others question the source of funds.
The repatriation forms part of broader regional movements, with buses already departing for Malawi via routes through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Social media influencers and other well-wishers have also launched fundraising campaigns to support the cause.
Ei bafethu iinto zotywala. I got into a fight over the weekend and kept telling this girl to stop biting me as I bled but she was so drunk she didn't listen. Yes I have a suppressed viral load but I had to track her down and tell her about my HIV status so she could get PEP😭
You can laugh now. Just remember that winning the World Cup would be a good distraction that would make us forget about other activities planned for later in the month.
Getting disqualified early means that we come back and get down to business.
Think about what you want.
