FCPS is proud to celebrate our 2026–27 Teacher of the Year nominees! 🎉
Each year, principals from every FCPS school nominate a teacher who goes above and beyond every day to support and inspire students. From this exceptional group of educators, one nominee will be selected as the 2026–27 FCPS Teacher of the Year and will represent Frederick County in the Maryland Teacher of the Year program.
This honor includes professional development opportunities throughout the year, recognition at a state-hosted banquet, collaboration with Teachers of the Year from across Maryland, and special recognition for the teacher’s home school.
Monocacy Elementary’s ALonna Soward-Puryear was named the 2025–26 Frederick County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

This first week back was a very special one. During the month of December students were given the opportunity to complete 25 ALEKs lessons. If they did, they got a pie of their choice. We made 28 house visits between yesterday and today. #RVP@FCPSMaryland

Hard-hitting article by the amazing Barbara Oakley. "Our brains need practice & memorization to move facts & skills into long-term memory, freeing up mental space for genuine problem-solving...a student cannot reason deeply about mathematics w/o mult'n facts and algebraic methods made automatic through practice"

“Because, but, so” works not because it’s cute but because it aligns with how memory and understanding actually form.
