@emilypawley I always keep mine off with other light sources on (smartboard with relaxing scene, Christmas lights, lamp, etc.). If I ask them if they want lights on, they always say no. Kids tell me the fluorescent lights are way too bright.
@heymrsbond I think we load up on direct instruction early on in the year then towards the end, we become facilitators if all goes well. We have opportunities to reteach as needed but the kids have much more ownership and independence towards the end of the year.

When I started calling parents to tell them what their kids did well, rather than always what they did wrong, my entire classroom dynamic changed for the better - and parents were happy to hear from me.
@mraspinall relationships with kids this way. It's not always the right thing... but they know that someone cares about them enough to give them time outside of class to vent/explain/process. You might be the only adult who gives them the opportunity. (3/3)
@mraspinall Sometimes it works out that their study overlaps with my prep and we can do it that way. I just hate to rush kids in a quick hallway conversation (where they have virtually no privacy) if there's clearly a bigger issue going on. I have built some of my greatest (2/3)

@Curiosity_Films Do circumstances matter? I tend to call co-workers by their first name, unless we're in front of kids, then I say "Mr./Ms./Mrs. Whoever." It didn't occur to me that I may be bothering people. Thank you for the insight.
