A 24-year-old Polish tennis player arrived in Paris last week ranked 114th in the world, with no sponsors, no guaranteed income, and no certainty she could even pay for her hotel room.
She had to win three qualifying matches just to enter the French Open main draw. Prize money is only paid at the end of the tournament, so a Polish sports drink brand quietly stepped in and covered her hotel bill.
Her name is Maja Chwalinska. And today, she plays in the French Open final.
Before this tournament, she had won exactly one Grand Slam main draw match in her entire career. She had battled depression so severe that in 2021 she couldn't get out of bed. She underwent knee surgery in 2022. She spent years grinding through small tournaments across Europe just to stay afloat.
Then she arrived in Paris, won three qualifiers, and kept winning. Zheng Qinwen. Elise Mertens. Maria Sakkari. Diana Shnaider. Nine straight matches. One set dropped.
She is now the first qualifier in French Open history to reach the final. The last time a qualifier reached a Grand Slam final, it was Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open. Raducanu won.
By simply making the final, Chwalinska has earned more prize money than her entire career combined. The runner-up cheque alone is $1.6 million. If she wins today, she takes home $3.25 million.
One week ago she couldn't pay for her hotel room.

And when Steve Kerr and @StephenCurry30 went and stood next to Biden? To celebrate trading a @WNBA player for a literal lord of war.
His views are his views. We can all find something or someone who doesnโt align with our own views. Donโt rinse a teammate in public. Thatโll get you sent out of NY. Heโs the man on that team, not you.
While I understand and appreciate the level of scientific power and potential we have in 2026. โHow on earthโ (literally) are we sure that this reference from 1877 is accurate. We didnโt have airplanes or satellites yet. Were Spanish conquistadors running El Niรฑo temperature checks on the Pacific Ocean as well? Whereโs the proof any of this is true from 150+ years ago?
Looks like Floridaโs getting another easy hurricane season thanks to this monster El Niรฑo. Biggest event in 150 years! ๐ฒ
Below-average storms, fewer majors, wind shear doing the heavy lifting. We might skate with minimal drama. ๐
But Iโm still worried about our fragile liberal Yankee transplants from NY, NJ, and Canada. These delicate snowflakes melt down when you explain basic biology โ imagine what a real cone does to them.
Hurricanes are selective like that. They take out the unstable debris. ๐๏ธ
Run home while you still can, princesses. You ainโt built for this. ๐๐
The Tampa Bay Rays and Hillsborough County have agreed to preliminary terms of a deal on a new Tampa Bay Rays stadium. It's what's called a memo of understanding, basically saying there is a deal but that nothing about it is binding yet. Learn More: https://t.co/s5XF2qvNWb
When is everyone going to start realizing that the manic on again off again war/peace rhetoric is really just insider trading?
And sprinkle in some murder.
Only a select few in the top tax bracket are benefiting from this, and the majority of you ainโt in it.
