@doctimcook
We now have much new data from #NAP7 on complications and risks associated with anaesthesia.
@doctimcook asks, is it now time for a standardised, written anaesthetic consent form?
Lots of views for and against in the room, what does @X think?
@RCoANews@NAPs_RCoA @jas_soar
What did the #NAP7 activity survey show?
@adk300 takes us through the data:
-89% of cases occur during weekdays
-only 4% of elective workload undertaken at the weekend
-relative fewer patients at the extremes of age, who are usually higher risk
-minimum monitoring standards from @Assoc_Anaes less well followed during procedural sedation and transfers to PACU/ICU
-median age of surgical patients has increased by 2.3 years
-rates of BMI >30 and >35 much higher in NAP7 than previous NAPs. More so in the obstetric population.
-less patients are now ASA grade 1, with increases in numbers of ASA grade 2, 3 and 4 grade patients.
-TIVA use has increased 3-fold in 5 years, and pEEG has increased too
-circulation complications most prevalent > airway > breathing/metabolic
-severe hypotension the most common complication (117 in 10,000), but complications more generally common in emergency cases
-these data have enormous implications for what we can and what we should tell patients

The POPPY study is a great opportunity for the anaesthetists to be involved in the 4th RAFT trainee lead project, & the first large UK national project looking at pain & opiate use after day surgery.
