@V8Sheppard I mean, you have the right to feel wronged, but if they don't buy your book, whether they pirate it or not, your income isn't affected at all. I just don't get the theft of income argument, I guess is the main thing which confuses me.

@V8Sheppard I just don't think it's nearly as black and white as you're making it out to be. I'm an author too, but I know I have no control over who pirates what. I don't think they're these terrible evil people who should be condemned at all costs.

@V8Sheppard I don't think your metaphor lines up though. If word of mouth leads to someone else buying a tv, they're essentially buying it off you/your publisher. I din't think many pirates would provide this benefit, but I think some do, and some may buy the book after if they like it.

@V8Sheppard It's not the same though. If they pirate your tv like they do a book you'd still have your tv, they'd just have a copy. I know how hard it is to make money as a writer, but I also think you can't convince people who pirate books to stop. Not justifying it, just an observation.

My kid is in a movie watching phase right now. Like, she wants to watch whole-ass movies most days. She asks her mum for Tinkerbell. She asks me to watch "a movie", so I usually go to Studio Ghibli for guidance. Yesterday was Ponyo, today is Spirited Away. 👍👍👍

How I know I'm a writer: I happen to keep writing books, whether it becomes profitable or not.

Feels like I'm a con artist for convincing publishers to continue releasing my work, but it's the shittiest con since no one really profits. I guess that's capitalism for ya.
