On this day in 1941, the Farhud pogrom began in Baghdad.

Jewish men, women, and children were hunted, murdered, raped, and robbed by mobs chanting hatred through the streets of Iraq’s capital.

The Farhud is a reminder that antisemitism in the Middle East did not begin because of Israel. It existed long before Israel’s rebirth.

Today we remember the victims and the ancient Iraqi Jewish community that was eventually driven from the land it had called home for over 2,500 years.

It’s been 50 years since this photo was taken. Palestinian terrorists invaded the Lebanese Christian town of Damour and massacred 582 Christian civilians.

It was an apocalypse, said a priest who survived the massacre.

“They were coming in thousands, shouting ‘Allahu Akbar! Let us attack them for the Arabs, let us offer a holocaust to Mohammad.’

They were slaughtering everyone, men, women and children.”

Men were lined up against the walls of their homes and gunned down.

Women were tortured and gang-raped.

Babies were shot in the back of the head.

Pregnant women had their babies cut out of the womb.

Il y a 107 ans débutait le Génocide Pontique. Présents depuis le VIIIe siècle av. J.-C. au sud de la Mer Noire, sur cette terre qui fut celle d'Homère, les Grecs du Pont ont vu leur destin basculer au début du XXe siècle.

Dès les années 1910, les autorités ottomanes les perçoivent comme un obstacle à leur projet de « turquisation ». Les quelque 700 000 Grecs qui vivent dans la région depuis des siècles commencent ainsi à être menacés. Entre 1916 et 1923, l'horreur se déchaîne : massacres, exécutions, et villages pillés puis réduits en cendres.

Des milliers de familles sont jetées sur les routes de l'exil, assassinées au bord des chemins ou condamnées à mourir d'épuisement. Ce nettoyage ethnique fera plus de 300 000 morts, emportés par la violence, la faim et le froid.

Un siècle plus tard, face au déni persistant de la Turquie d'aujourd'hui et à sa politique agressive qui continue de menacer Chypre et la stabilité de la région, se souvenir est notre devoir face à l’oubli.
