@engageducate I also think I never really got practice in critical thinking through the lens of application—I may have been presented with “application scenarios” but never was asked “now that you have learned this, how can you use this?” It was always presented to me
Almost everything I've learned in the past year has felt more like a question than an answer. All of my learning has made me want to push further, learn more. And as someone who loved being a student, this is a feeling I almost NEVER had as a student.
So so grateful to @engageducate @CESCasey@BemeryTech @Ed_Tech_Family @InclusiveSTEMCS and manyyy more for all being a part of this new kind of learning
Thinking a lot about A) how to process this new learning experience and B) how to give my own students the sense of urgency and curiosity I feel in my learning now
Trying not to cry watching my first students graduate 6th grade 💔 two years ago these kiddos made me a teacher during my MAT program and now they are entering MIDDLE SCHOOL! Congratulations! 🎉
Because our students grow up. They leave our rooms and our schools. They take what they have learned and they go out into the world. And if they have learned racism, discreet or overt, that is what they're taking with them.
This week, my students had an assignment in which they needed to act as teachers and teach someone else about something. I asked them how differences in who their student was would affect their teaching. And I'm learning something from their work.
And ESPECIALLY at an elementary level, where students may not yet have developed the critical thinking to decide if they agree with those messages, it is essential that the precedent being set is one of anti-racist thinking and behavior.
