We never know when disaster may strike.
Mother tree squirrels stay prepared by maintaining
several nests, or “dreys,” in case of emergency. This
can include threats by fire, predators, parasites, or can
simply be built due to access to food. In doing so, she
is able to relocate her babies, called kits, quickly and
with ease.

Arctic ground squirrels are a special species of squirrel. Aside from being both the largest and the northern-most North American ground squirrel species, they also hold the record for the lowest body temperature ever recorded in a mammal (26ºF). They hibernate for over half the year, slowing down their organs and bodily functions to maintain such a low body temperature. This phenomenon is called supercooling. Every 2-3 weeks, the squirrels shiver and shake until they reach their normal body temperature of 98ºF. Once reached, they stop moving and their body temperature drops back down to below freezing. Think of all the Arctic ground squirrels hibernating as you read this post! How cute!

Ross Bagdasarian Sr. created Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958 when he recorded his own voice and sped up the playback, resulting in the high-pitched voices of the Chipmunks that we all know. This technique won Bagdasarian two Grammy Awards in sound engineering. Alvin and the Chipmunks released several award-winning records before Bagdasarian’s death in 1972. After his passing, the franchise was revived, and the Chipmunks have since become one of the most successful children’s artists of all time, even earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Hoary marmots are large ground squirrels that inhabit mountainous regions of northwest North America. They are the largest species of North American ground squirrel and are most widely known for their high-pitched alarm call. They weigh between 10 and 20 pounds and can spend up to 8 months in hibernation. They are currently listed as a species of least concern, but populations may start declining due to climate and landscape changes.

Have you noticed that the squirrels are looking extra fluffy now that it’s cold outside? That’s because they’re eating more and storing more fat on their bodies so they can stay warm during the winter!

Have you considered just how fast squirrels travel? Some squirrel species can reach speeds up to 20 mph. They evade predators by running in an unpredictable zig-zag pattern, making it difficult for the predator to land an attack.
