@afneil If people want larger state, better funded public services, etc., I'd much rather they argue for higher taxes than to indulge in the fantasy that you can just do it by taxing the rich.
@QuidVeritas@antongeorgiou_@Brent_Council@LibDems Interesting approach. So the Labour Party is happy to be in coalition with any party in a local authority where it and the other party together represent a majority of the votes cast. Sounds like lots of Reform/Labour coalitions planned.
As of today Ed Davey's European policy is *less pro European* than the two leading Labour contenders to be Prime Minister.
This is an utterly mad bit of positioning.
We Liberal Democrats are a pro-European party - so why on earth don't we say that we want to rejoin the EU?
BREAKING: The Lib Dems 10-minute rule bill to rejoin the customs union has just passed!
After a 100-100 tie the deputy speaker followed convention and cast the deciding vote in favour.
It’s unlikely to get government time so probably won't progress - but indicates strength of feeling on this issue
Parliament has just voted to cut Brexit red tape - passed on a knife-edge after the Speaker’s tie-breaking vote.
My @LibDems colleague @AlPinkerton's Ten Minute Rule Bill calls for a bespoke UK–EU Customs Union. It’s the right move to fix our trade relationship with the EU.
🚨BREAKING🚨
MPs have voted to PASS our bill to establish a UK-EU customs union.
The Prime Minister must now listen MPs, drop his self-imposed red lines and finally go for proper growth with an ambitious trade deal with the EU.
It’s time to admit what a disaster Brexit has been.
Liberal Democrats have a plan to fix our trade with Europe to turbocharge the economy, fix the cost of living crisis and properly fund our public services.
Our farmers are key to fighting the climate crisis, safeguarding our food security, and boosting growth as a vital British industry.
But since the last Autumn Budget, they’ve been hammered by the government’s flawed family farm tax.
Lib Dems are clear: it must be scrapped.
My Sunday Times piece: Rachel Reeves’s fiscal consolidation in the budget will have a much better chance of success if it includes spending cuts as well as tax hikes:
Spending cuts are crucial for Reeves to get out of this fiscal hole

My views on inflation are featured in the I-paper today: “Inflation will still be at 3.5% at end of 2026, predicts ex-Bank of England economist.” I expect inflation to get stuck around 3-3.5pc after hitting 4pc very soon. 2pc not in prospect in 2026/27.. https://t.co/zn0E7hF59o
