Usually when a team goes far in the Europa League, League form suffers.
#AVFC win the thing and finish 4th, after the lowest net spend in the league back in the summer.
Unai Emery- pound for pound the best manager in the League and the manager of the season.
Your reward for qualifying for the Champions League and winning a European trophy is selling your best player to avoid financial punishment. Modern football ladies and gentleman.
Villa spent €36m in the summer just gone & Freiburg spent €32m
7 players that started for Villa tonight were already at the club when Emery arrived and were in a relegation battle.
One thing we’re not going to do is act like Villa bought this Europa League title.
Manager of the Season.
Manage 15 games at a Manchester United that's spent another trillion ,come on in, your name's on the list.
Manage 3 seasons at Villa, 3 semi finals, 1 final, 2 Champions League qualifications using half a dozen players who played in the Championship, you can't come in.
A decision so laughable that when someday Unai is nominated, I hope he tells them to fuck off.
A mockery of what achievement versus caretaking is.
From Sefton Road to Vicarage Road to Villa Park to Wembley to Old Trafford to San Siro back to Villa Park to Goodison Park and finally to Portman Road. Unai Emery is a great coach but not beyond criticism. If Liverpool fans can criticise a title winning coach and City fans bag Pep when he gets it wrong then Unai isn't off limits.
Too slow. With a fully fit selection the dead slow play works because the players on midfield and forwards are good enough to hit teams in well organised bursts, or in the case of City and Arsenal last season at home, 90 minutes of pure graft and intelligence.
Now it's just slow and the coaching staff need to instill a simple message or this is going to be an 8 or 9 game season major capitulation.
That message is, forget Europe ( we're not in the top 6 in Europa League at the moment, nevermind fucking winners elect. No chance), forget overplaying, forget the keeper standing on it for 5 minutes at a time. Play aggressive, tempo, spite, make opposition feel discomfort as though it's a relegation team they're playing. And if we do that, then we can limp over the line with the cavalry joining in 4 to 6 weeks time.
Managers have to be flexible and no manager can play how he wants to all of the time because injuries, poor form, loss of confidence will hit at some point. So a plan B has to become A.
If we play the same way for the next 8 games, we'll be out of Europe and looking at Conference League qualification. Let's own it, embrace it and ditch the style and start duking it out with teams physically, work harder on set pieces and the absolute basics.
But does Unai have a Plan B? We're about to find out because tonight is on him and his selections.

'Aston Villa also held a strong interest in Gallagher, however no agreements were reached amid their desire to maintain financial discipline'.
Ah there we have it, PSR working as expected for the small few.

🚨🟣🔵 Aston Villa are on the verge of club to club agreement for Conor Gallagher.
Negotiations are at final stages with Atlético Madrid, loan with buy option clause to eventually becoming mandatory.
Talks to continue on player side now. @MatteMoretto
