The British Normandy Memorial will host a Service of Remembrance to mark the 82nd anniversary of D-Day. You can watch the service LIVE at 9.30am BST (10.30am French time) this Saturday 6th June: https://t.co/AYN98mF6gc
The service will be attended by a small group of Normandy and Second World War Veterans, Lord Richard Dannatt (Memorial Chairman), Sir Thomas Drew @UKinFrance and Lord @Vernon_Coaker (whose Uncle is named on the Memorial), plus other dignitaries.
French schoolchildren will take part, alongside Youth Ambassador Alexander Churchill, Sir Winston Churchill's great-great-grandson.

#OnThisDay 50 yrs ago in 1976 the 3rd and final Cod War between the UK & Iceland ended with Iceland winning a 12 mile exclusion zone and a 200 mile economic zone around it's coast, now an international standard. The Royal Navy was heavily committed to escorting UK Fishing Boats.
#OnThisDay 1855 @RoyalNavy Lt’s Cecil Buckley & Hugh Burgoyne from HM Ships MIRANDA & SWALLOW, with Gunner John Robarts from HMS ARDENT landed to destroy 73 Russian Vessels, stores and provisions during Crimean War under heavy fire. All survived to receive their Victoria Cross.
The word ‘Aloof’ also has its origin in the days of sail probably from the Dutch word loef later luff in English meaning to windward and away from a lee shore, from where danger lies. It now means ‘distant’ for that very reason.

#OnThisDay 1849 Rear Admiral Sir Nesbit Josiah Willoughby died. His remarkable though controversial career saw him wounded multiple times, court-martialled 4 times, dismissed the @RoyalNavy
then taken back, fighting for the Russian Army. He was described as undoubtedly violent.
