Through #ProjectAfricaGRADIENT, an initiative we support with @Novartis and @MRCza, scientists are studying genetic variation amongst African populations. Carene Ndong Sima from @StellenboschUni is looking at understanding how people’s genes affect their responses to TB drugs.
47 participants took part in a hybrid 'Human Population Genetics' workshop last week.
Hosted @StellenboschUni at the BMRI building. Thanks to the team @SUTBHostGen for facilitating such a great course.

A year ago, a non-academic friend listened to a talk I gave. I thought it went great. My friend disagreed.
She said that academics are experts at making interesting stuff boring—and that we should all take a speech class.
So I did. And here are 6 most useful things I learned.
We are so excited to see our BSc Honours, Masters and Doctoral #graduates walk across stage this week in celebration of completion of their postgraduate studies at #MBHG🎓
To all our Muslim staff, students and friends: Wishing you a blessed Ramadan.

Ahead of #WorldTBDay, @StopTB calls for an urgent increase in funding by fourfold to #endTB by 2030. Latest projections show an average of US$19.6 billion per year will be needed over the next eight years for TB prevention and care https://t.co/nirXFT4tn1 #InvestToEndTB
There is a DEADLY DIVIDE ☠️
Investment of US$117 million for #TB vaccines vs US$100 Billion for #COVID19 vaccines 💰
One year to develop and start roll out of the COVID-19 vaccines versus 100 years to develop and roll out one new TB vaccine 💉
Why?
#WorldTBDay#InvestToEndTB
Every day more than 4,100 people die from TB, an airborne preventable and treatable disease. We cannot simply stand by and watch people fall ill and die.
the TB Host Genetics research group supports the #InvestToEndTB campaign.

On #WorldTBDay, we call on the South African government 🇿🇦 to urgently step up to #InvestToEndTB and #SaveLives
We are overjoyed to have not one but TWO amazing #MBHG researchers being honoured at the @MRCza 8th Scientific Merit awards this evening
