There is a reason Notre-Dame de Paris became such an important example of Gothic architecture

The builders wanted to move away from the heavy, dark interiors of many earlier churches

So they used pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttresses, which allowed them to raise the structure higher and open up the walls for larger windows

What looks beautiful to us today was also a remarkable piece of medieval engineering
