Here's what individuals with Down Syndrome typically report:

- Almost 100% expressed that they were happy with their lives
- 97% liked who they were as individuals
- 99% expressed love for their families
- 86% felt they could make friends easily

Yes, about half have health issues, but the majority of heart issues are fixed during surgery and aids like hearing aids and glasses help them see and hear just fine.

But you know what matters more? We are all imperfect and differently abled. We all matter. We all hold incredible value. And we all deserve a chance at life and love, no matter what.

You made a choice. You considered your child’s life expendable due to the possibility of hardship and inconvenience of your own.

I don’t know you or follow you, but Christ does. He knows you and sees you. The good and the bad. The hurt, shame and grief. All of it.

Romans 5:8 says that “ But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

And even in this He himself bore on his body the marks of all our sin and anguish, and yes, yours, even in this very moment.

When you considered this childs life expendable for what it would cost you. Christ considered his own life expendable because of what it offered you.

My prayer is that you and your wife experience his grace and forgiveness and in faith and repentance turn to Jesus for healing.

I am the oldest of 5 kids (mom is a stone cold killer)

My sister, who follows me in birth order and is 2 years younger, came to this world disabled: nonverbal and severely developmentally delayed on almost every cognitive dimension

I “spoke for her” until she could talk on her own (around age 5)

-still lives with my parents
-can’t really take care of herself
-has major health issues that are almost a full time job for my parents
-gets in fights with my kids
-borrows money from me with no intent to repay

And yet

imagine having the cast of characters from “love on the spectrum” in your life 24/7

someone who will go to any Padres game with you at the drop of a hat

someone who is always available to get taco bell with you no matter what

someone who never forgets your birthday and makes sure that you get cake (she wants some too)
