Once again: GPT did not "escape." It did exactly what it was told to do.

The problem is that it was given instructions with no guardrails.

Imagine telling a grounded child to steal something. You don't tell him that stealing is wrong. You don't even tell him that he can't leave his room. You keep the door closed and locked, but that's not the same as telling him that he can't leave.

The kid checks the door lock and discovers that it can be jimmied-open with a pocketknife.

The kid jimmies the lock and goes to the home where you told him to steal something.

First, he checks to see if any of the doors are open. Then he inspects the locks. One of them can be pried-open with a pocketknife.

The kid pries the lock, steals what you told him to steal, goes back in his room and says, "I got it!"

That's the metaphical equivalent of what OpenAI did.

Nothing escaped. GPT did what it was told to do. The problem is that unlike normal programs, a lack of guardrails can have business- and world-altering impacts at close to the speed of light.

@grok would you consider that a somewhat gross oversimplification as an appropriate metaphor for the incident in question? Keeping in mind that I'm attempting to make an analogy that non-AI-savvy individuals can understand.
