Deltarune itself does a very good job of explaining who each character is and their roles.

@collaredshotgun You absolutely don't need to play Undertale, he himself said they are two separate universes, yes playing undertale helps if you wanna get really deep into the lore and gaster stuff, but undertale is a standalone game that you can go into completely blind.
