Its times like these which make me extremely proud of being a Hazaraywaal.

Yes we also have baradri fights and religious fanatics and anti Shia sentiment, and social conservatism, but nothing to the point where a flat out butchery of people is promoted and protected by the local population, and is a norm practiced en masse. Hazara is an absolute and complete outlier when compared to the rest of Pakhtunkhwa and it is a glaring reality that you just can’t ignore.

Every single marginalised group and tribe from across Pakistan comes here for refuge and peace.

We were kids when our neighbours’ siblings, Urdu speaking muhajirs, fled Karachi due to the ethnic fights in early 90s and lived across us for 5 years in peace. Their kids went to school with us. If I count the immediate 10 neighbours next to us, the languages beside Hindko and Urdu I recall are Pashto, Kohati Hindko, Chitrali, Punjabi, Seraiki, and Potohari.

Come 2008, a lot of folks from Swat came, stayed, went to universities and started trade here, and lived peacefully - I made friends from Matta, Kabal, Madyan, and Mingora. Come Zarb e Azb, a lot of Wazirs and Mehsuds moved to Abbottabad and still remain - comfortably integrated and at ease in Hazara. And we are happy to have them. In fact a lot of people from both Southern and Central Pashtunkhwa also live here now.

Later as I integrated more with the khwajasira community, I found out Mansehra is considered the most respectful and peaceful place for the community across Pakistan. And many come to live here when they are threatened by gangs, learn Hindko, and take it with them back when they return. No violence, no issues, and respected wherever they live in Mansehra or Abbottabad.

We have an entire colony of Bohri people,
You don’t get THIS much linguistic, tribal, and ethnic diversity in ONE region and yet have it be the most peaceful in Pakistan. And no we aren’t a multicultural urban metropolis - we are small towns where Hindko is very much the norm and the lingua franca. Even the Pashtuns speak Hindko here.

Regional and geographic dynamics aside, there is definitely something that our ancestors and Princely rulers did right - reminder, northern Hazara was a princely state till 1956.

Academics and students of peace should be studying Hazara as a case study.

Afghans are parading a 1977-model Russian-made T-55 tank around the city, falsely claiming that it belongs to the Pakistan Army. T-55 is soviet era tank and was never acquired by Pakistan.
