And think not that Allah is unaware of what the oppressors do. He only grants them respite until the day their eyes will stare in horror. (Quran-14:42)
Choices we make matter
Akbar’s clerks measured the fields of most of northern India, bigha by bigha, and wrote down what each owed. In 1600, Lahore Subah was assessed almost as high as Delhi. The lands that are now Pakistan held 8 percent of the empire’s people and paid more than 10 percent of its revenue. Under the Raj the pattern held: in 1941 these lands held under 10 percent of the people and paid 11 percent. For three and a half centuries this land raised more per head than the rest of the empire: $39 under Akbar, $53 in 1900 and $126 in 1941, in today’s dollars.
Then we made our choices. Since 1941 our population has grown more than ninefold, against less than fivefold in India’s Mughal lands and about fourfold in Bangladesh’s. Today we hold 18 percent of the old empire’s people and raise less than 12 percent of its revenue. Pakistan now raises $211 a head, while the same Mughal soil across the border raises $390.
Bangladesh made different choices. In 1941 its lands held 12 million more people than ours; today we hold 92 million more. It taxes even less per head than we do, yet one in four of its children is stunted against four in ten of ours, and nearly eight in ten Bangladeshis can read against six in ten Pakistanis. It did not find a bigger purse. It chose fewer children per family, and it sent its daughters to school.
When children multiply faster than the means to raise them, nothing breaks at once. Everything thins: a smaller share of the river, a more crowded classroom, a body that never reaches its full height.
Same rivers, same soil, same inheritance. Geography did not decide our fate, and neither did history. Choices did, and choices can still be made.
Two Muslim female journalists allege they were detained and brutally assaulted by police in India’s capital, Delhi. Police have denied the allegations, claiming the journalists were brought to the station over an illegal parking dispute.
Adding my support here to GC and the other former international captains. I hope the court ordered medical assessment be allowed to run its course, and that family visits continue. I hope Imran Khan is treated with the dignity anyone deserves
The mishandling of Mir Raza Ali’s investigation by the police is a clear indication that the perpetrators are being protected.. Karachi’s youth has had enough, we deserve total fairness.
"The old colonial master had sailed home; a new establishment, home-grown but colonial in instinct, took his chair. That is the quiet tragedy of our first independence: we did not defeat colonialism so much as change its address."- J. Mansoor Ali Shah https://t.co/JVcYTSmyRz
Feynman allegedly said, "Imagine how much harder physics would be if electrons had feelings."
The electrons in economics are: human beings, firms, governments etc. And they do have feelings (desires), and the agency to respond to those feelings
This is what makes questions in economics fundamentally harder ... and "more open"
It has now been around 1,100 days since my father, Imran Khan, was imprisoned, and my brother and I haven’t heard his voice since March. For months, we’ve been denied contact with him. We remain in the dark about his access to healthcare as his eyesight continues to deteriorate. He urgently needs medical attention, and with no family or legal access, we don’t even get any second hand information or reassurance.
I’ve found myself especially missing him recently. I want to speak to him about mundane things like my cricket, books I’ve been reading and what new movies are good. I understand the people of Pakistan want their chosen leader free, but I miss my father more than ever.
But this is not just about a father. It is about Pakistan, and its future. A rigged, authoritarian regime continues to crush political opposition, undermine democratic institutions, and deny millions of Pakistanis their right to freely choose their leaders, whilst terrorising those who speak their beliefs.
I once again plea to the international community to not look away. Silence in the face of injustice only enables it.
This is brilliant and should be studied by central bankers everywhere! Peoples Bank of China was the first to deflate a massive, leveraged housing bubble without a single quarter of economic contraction or loss of growth momentum in the real economy.
A success for the history books.
Today I, being the Chief Executive of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, along with my cabinet and parliamentarians, going to Adiala Jail situated in the province of Punjab to show solidarity with former Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Imran Khan.
The federal government has stopped us in Islamabad 26 number chowk. It’s not only an insult of the chief executive but of the 46 Million people of KP.
The federal government has also stopped the Gas of KP. Punjab government has stopped the wheat movement towards KP. All of these acts are against the spirit of federation and the constitution of Pakistan.
Mr. Imran Khan has lost 85% of his eyesight due to the negligence of Adiala Jail’s administration and their handlers. He is not being allowed to meet his legal counsel, family and even personal physician. The federal government is not obeying the court orders and Punjab government is violating the fundamental rights of a political prisoner. Mr. Imran Khan is being treated inhumanely and has been placed in complete solitary confinement since November 2025.
We strongly demand the immediate access of Imran Khan sahb’s family and personal physician to him without any further delay. The state of his health is a matter of serious national concern and any harm caused to him due to negligence or deliberate denial of medical care is the direct responsibility of the federal government, the Punjab police, the administration of Adiala Jail and their handlers. We warn that the nation is watching and history will not forgive those who remain silent or complicit. Justice must prevail and it will prevail!
