Q: Gurudev, What is the difference between mind and the soul (self)? How can we establish ourselves in the self?
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji - Let us contemplate on the difference between Atma (the soul or the self) and the mind. The soul is unchanging, but the mind keeps on changing from time to time. This is why our mind has been linked to the moon (referring to the different phases of the waxing and waning moon). It is said, ‘chandrama manaso-jayate‘ (From the Purusha Sukta in Rig Veda; meaning: From His Cosmic Mind was born the Moon).
There is a deep connection between the moon and the mind. Just as the moon waxes and wanes over the days, in the same way, our mind also experiences ups and downs. Sometimes it expands, sometimes it contracts. Sometimes it is happy without any reason, and sometimes it is miserable without any reason. This is why people through the ages have said, ‘One who conquers the mind conquers the entire World’. The mind alone is the reason behind bondage and liberation.
Whether we experience some bondage or attachment, or whether we feel free, the reason for this is the mind. So we have to train the mind again and again. This is the essence of knowledge. As we go on practicing this regularly, we gradually attain the siddhi (extraordinary ability) to tame the mind – just as a person, after repeatedly going through problems in life gradually gains the ability to smile through them. Then a stage comes where he does not feel any misery in spite of a problem.
As we go through the experiences of life (whether pleasant or unpleasant), a stage comes when this realization dawns within us that ‘Everything is nothing’. That is when we begin to get established in the Self.
To be established in the Self means that regardless of the person, object or situation that comes before us, we do not lose our smile and equanimity even for a moment. Even if we do lose it, it is momentary and we instantly gain it back. Then we are strongly and firmly established in the Self. Then it is said that one has become a Siddha (a perfected one), that one has truly become established in the Self.

Q: Gurudev, I heard recently you speak that the "Time has come for the voice of non-violence to be heard loud and clear." What do you exactly mean by this statement?
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji - When I was growing up in India, non-violence was considered the highest virtue. In fact, my grandfather was a strong supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, and an advocate of non-violence to bring about social and political change. Modern society also has prominent icons of non-violence such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Lech Wałęsa. Yet today, basic human values are being eroded, resulting in violence and aggression.
The high incidence of violence in the society is appalling, whether at the domestic or societal level. Aggression has become an integral part even in the lives of children.
Violence makes noise and news while non-violence happens in silence. The time has come for the voice of non-violence to be heard loud and clear. We need to bring back the pride in being peaceful and steady, and compassionate.
To end violence of any kind from our society, we need to commit to the human values of friendliness, compassion, and non-aggression.
A lack of connectedness or belongingness breeds crime and violence. No individual can be violent against someone with whom he or she has a true sense of belongingness.
Limited wisdom and a lack of education on human values are the main factors creating division. We need to introduce a sense of belongingness to nurture the character and the heart. This will not be possible without putting attention on values of responsibility, compassion and caring for humanity.
Violence is neither our true nature nor the basis of civilization. When we bring up human values in society and give people confidence that non-violence has more power and a longer-lasting impact than violence, the whole world will benefit. This is what Mahatma Gandhi demonstrated for us. We need to work collectively to bring back non-violence as the highest virtue.
