Just realised they are all narratives about protagonists losing control, and their existential weight.
What Kamal Haasan said is not an established or universally accepted fact but a generally accepted assumption for a very long time. While it's generally believed that the South Indian languages may have had a common linguistic ancestor, and Tamil is often considered the closest to that root, we do not have definitive evidence to conclude that Tamil was that predecessor. That uncertainty is the actual fact. Therefore, Kamal Haasan’s statement can be seen as a factual inaccuracy, but it is being disproportionately amplified, particularly by right-wing groups, with the intent to sow division between two South Indian states.
This narrative serves a political purpose. That is, to weaken the unified opposition to Hindi imposition by creating internal linguistic rifts in the South. It’s worth noting that several right-wing leaders have previously claimed that “Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages,” and South Indians have rightfully criticized such statements. Yet, we did not see widespread calls for resignations or public apologies in those cases.
So it’s important to ask who benefits from this controversy? It is certainly not the people of Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. It’s the common people who stand to lose if such linguistic debates fuel animosity between two ancient and culturally rich communities. No one is imposing Tamil on Kannadigas the way Hindi is often imposed across non-Hindi speaking states. Kannadigas should see through this divisive narrative pushed by certain groups and recognize the broader political agenda at play.
Whether Kamal Haasan apologizes or not, the loss is not for him personally. The real damage will be the growing mistrust between Tamil and Kannada speakers. Let’s not allow political opportunists to pit us against each other. The wiser course would be to acknowledge the misstatement, not exaggerate its impact, and move forward in solidarity.
