1,128 days ago I quit my job and started writing online.

I posted every day for two years, then began working on something with Penguin.

Today, finally, I'm announcing my book.

The Cultural Tutor: 49 Lessons You Wish You'd Learned At School

It's out this September and available for pre-order now at all the places you usually buy your books.

I've also teamed up with Waterstones to give you 25% off — pre-order now at Waterstones with code CULTURAL25 for 25% off until 11:59PM GMT, 03/09/2025, using this link: https://t.co/3AL18nwr5k

I always look forward to sharing my annual list of favorite books, movies, and music. Today I’ll start by sharing some of the books that have stuck with me long after I finished reading them.

Check them out this holiday season, preferably at an independent bookstore or library!

One of the most recognized objects of the last century, and an icon of the modern movement, the Barcelona Chair by Knoll exudes a simple elegance that epitomizes Mies van der Rohe's most famous maxim-"less is more." Each Barcelona piece is a tribute to the marriage of modern design and exceptional craftsmanship.

Breton organised several exhibitions of Kahlo's art in New York, and another in Paris. There, in 1938, the Louvre bought one of her self-portraits.

Why did she make so many of them?

"I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best."

The Garden of Earthly Delights will always defy explanation; Bosch's imagination is surely one of the most extraordinary powerful there has ever been.

Even the best of the 20th century Surrealists can't match him; the art of Bosch exceeds its context.

Have you ever wondered why the world is full of glass skyscrapers?

It's because of this model for a skyscraper in Berlin that was never built.

It may look ordinary, but that's the point. This model is more than 100 years old...

All the "one year" retrospectives are fine, but please remember two things. 1) Putin invaded Ukraine NINE years ago. He was allowed to occupy and destabilize Ukraine for 8 years until confident enough to launch all-out war. Compromise and deescalation did that.

Jaký bude postup a kdy stavba tedy vyroste? 👇🏻

Visiting space aliens, upon seeing humans oppress — or kill — one another over who they worship, who they sleep with, what side of an arbitrary line they’re born on, or how absorptive their skin is to sunlight, would surely race home & report no sign of intelligent life on Earth.

Christoper Nolan hates CGI and prefers to use practical effects for insane shots.

Here are 5 gems.

1/ INTERSTELLAR: Nolan spent $100k to plant 500 real acres of corn in Alberta. After filming, he sold the crop for profit.

Within the next year Russia will spiral into a deep political crisis. There is a nonzero chance that it may scale up existing separatist tendencies leading to the breakup of the empire. In this thread I will outline a model of how this process could look like🧵
