No one has ever covered prep sports better than my friend, my brother and my first mentor @SacMedia_JoeD. What a legend. Love you buddy!

[Joe Davidson @SacMedia_JoeD]

Those are some great coaching names there. Dave Hoskins and Mel Fontes in football, the founding coaches when Valley opened in 1977, and Jim Smrekar, a San Jose transplant who made Valley a basketball force in the 1980s.

[Bob in East Sac® @BobNEastSac]

@SacMedia_JoeD I hooped at Valley, while Hoskins was doing his conditioning drills with Fontes.

Smreaker though it would be a good idea for us to work out with Hoskins and Fontes in the off season and it was brutal.

Best of luck to you on your next chapter, I know that you will kill it.

My farewell story at The Sacramento Bee. What I saw, what inspired me, what moved me to tears.

My next chapter starts next week at Abridged/PBS/KVIE in Sacramento. Same beat, same passion...

@SacBee_JoeD @PlacerAthletics @SMontoyaMP @MaxPreps @J_Georgeson26 In 1972, Bill Miller left an assistant football coaching job at Long Beach State University for a job at Del Campo High School in Fair Sadly, the SJUSD couldn’t offer him a teaching position and Placer did. The rest is history!

What's going on in East Bay football?

With an unprecedented five programs pulling the plug on their seasons just weeks in, the region's challenges are being revealed

[Joe Davidson @SacMedia_JoeD]

I enjoyed doing this story. Have known @PlacerAthletics FB coach Joey Montoya & brother @SMontoyaMP of @MaxPreps for years.
This book and potential movie is rooted in their grandfather's remarkable coaching impact of the Placer Hillmen

@radiohudson @pjpetersen5 @abridgedpbskvie Yes. Will change that today, too. JoeDMedia will be the new tag (it's "under review" to make sure I'm not criminally rogue or something)

[Joe Davidson @SacMedia_JoeD]

This is too cool, even for old school, and thanks @pjpetersen5

A great college coach.
An absolute blunder as an NFL coach.
He wanted to run option run plays, including Joe Namath with bad knees.

Lou Holtz, 50 years ago today

NBC's Jack Buck and Paul Maguire discuss how Holtz — in his first and ultimately only year as an NFL head coach — sought to instill a college-type atmosphere and approach for his players on the Jets.

@MarkRCondit @SteveFryer It was worthy of a verbal reprimand by the official, at the very least!

[Joe Davidson @SacMedia_JoeD]

Did he flag you @SteveFryer or just issue a sideline warning?
