Zambia’s opposition parties, grouped around the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), have been asking President Hichilema to call for early general elections, arguing that he has mismanaged or failed to run the country. Yet under the current Constitution of Zambia, the President has no powers to call for any election. By asking Hichilema to call for a general election, the opposition leaders are either unforgivably ignorant or genuinely misreading the law, and whichever it is, neither is acceptable in presidential hopefuls.
When opposition leaders who are aspiring to lead the country exhibit repeated and dreadful ignorance of the very constitution they accuse Hichilema of violating, we should get very concerned. For these are the people who would themselves readily swear to uphold and maintain the constitution of Zambia, were they to get elected.
Perhaps we should make it mandatory for everyone to read and show understanding of the constitution before aspiring to or assuming any public office and taking oath of that office. For how can anyone swear to defend and protect something they have neither read nor understood?
Botswana has been named as the best safari destination in Africa by Safari Bookings.
Tanzania and Zambia came in second and third places respectively.
A safari is a journey to look at wild animals.
