Announcement of the Passing of H.E Dr @hagegeingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, 04 February 2024

Fellow Namibians,

It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia has passed on today, Sunday 4 February 2024 at around 00h04 at Lady Pohamba Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment from his medical team. At his side, was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children.

His medical team, as I informed the nation only yesterday has been trying its utmost best to ensure that our President recovers. Regrettably,notwithstanding the team’s spirited effort to save his life, sadly, fellow Namibians, President Geingob passed on.

Fellow Namibians,

The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house. At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations and other protocols. Further announcements in this regard will be made.

While keeping the President’s bereaved family, and you, dear fellow Namibians, in our thoughts and prayers, Cabinet will convene with immediate effect in order to make the necessary state arrangements in this regard.

May the Soul of our beloved Dr Hage G. Geingob Rest in Eternal Peace.

Azam TV recorded a 26% growth of subscribers last year, as it continues to be the fastest-growing pay-TV operator in Tanzania.

Azam added 234,612 new subscribers last year, bringing the total number of its active decoders to 1,135,479, according to latest data from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

Azam TV is part of the Bakhresa Group of Companies, a family-owned Tanzanian conglomerate.

China's Star Media, which operates as Star Times, posted a 3.2% growth of subscribers in Tanzania in 2023.

The market leader added 67,532 new customers last year, bringing the number of its active subscribers to 2,158,795.

Multichoice, a South African company that operates DStv, saw it's subscriber base declining in Tanzania to 245,349 in 2023, down from 256,329 a year ago.

Apart from the Big 3 pay-TV operators in Tanzania -- Star Times, Azam and DStv -- there are four other smaller operators.

They include Continental (68,804 subscribers), ZUKU (32,156), BTL (17,392) and Agape (4,001).

The total number of pay-TV subscribers in Tanzania increased to 3,661,976 in 2023 from 3,369,521 in 2022.

Tanzania's population of 62 million is young, fast growing and urbanising, making the country fertile for expansion of pay-TV operators.
