NYSC CAMP WITHOUT MILITARY ACTIVITIES? BAD IDEA
Now weโre hearing that NYSC may be headed by civilians instead of military personnel, and that parades and paramilitary activities could be scrapped.
If this is true, then I think the government needs to rethink this decision.
Firstly, letโs be honest: many young people go to camp not because of skills acquisition programmes, but to experience discipline, structure, and a taste of hardship outside their comfort zone. For many โsoft lifeโ kids, camp is their first real exposure to waking up early, obeying instructions, and living with people from different backgrounds.
Secondly, the military drills, parades, and paramilitary activities are part of what makes NYSC camp memorable and unique. Many of us looked forward to those experiences. They create bonding, discipline, and a sense of national service.
If you remove these elements, then what exactly makes NYSC camp different from an ordinary orientation programme or seminar?
Reforms are important, but not every tradition should be discarded. If these reports are true, I believe President Tinubu and the relevant authorities should review the reforms carefully and ensure that the core identity and purpose of NYSC are not lost.
